NBA Referees: What to do?

Recently, NBA superstar Demarcus Cousins shares his opinion on NBA officiating after a controversial call that caused the game. He sarcastically applauded the referees after making a poor call that costed the game. This brings about the question of whether or not if NBA officiating is a problem and if the referees are biased.

When asked whether or not if NBA officiating is a problem, AP European teacher Mr. Coval says, “ I think it’s an issue, because of the difficulty of the task.” Freshman Ismail A. has the same disappointment “Officiating is a significant problem because crucial calls during key moments in the game are sometimes wrong or missed, changing the game’s outcome.”

When discussing NBA officiating, bias is always a topic for discussion. Ismail A. shares his thought on so “I believe refs are biased because some players aren’t treated as well as they should be, for example, Demarcus Cousins” “ Some of the superstars will get more calls in their favor, and also the home crowd has an influence on referees’ calls” Says Steven G., voicing his opinion on referees being biased.

In defense for NBA officiating, Mr. Coval states, “It’s the hardest refereeing job of all the professional sports.” Sophomore Ariel S shares similar thoughts, saying, “There’s a lot of pressure on the line, especially during the playoffs.” He goes on to say, “No random person can be a referee, there are obviously many requirements and training needed to fulfill to be an NBA referee.

At the end of each interview, the people were asked to rate NBA officiating from 1-10, one being the worst and ten being the best. Freshman Stephen D states, “I would give them an eight because they’re in a way the best referees in the world and have shown so.” Ariel S. has a mutual response, stating, “ I’d probably rate them an eight because they do get most of the calls right, it’s just at a handful of times they miss a crucial call.”

Hopefully, in the near future, NBA referees will implement new systems and overall become better officiators to make basketball more enjoyable for everyone
